Formula D / Vegas Pro Am: Team KSport’s Experience – From Epic Disaster to Epic Win!

Words By: Chris Minshall

Epic.  That is the only word that comes to mind after the last 7 days for Team Ksport!!  After getting back from our 3000 mile road trip to Seattle and back we had some repairs to complete before we could head out to Las Vegas for Pro Am Round 4 / Formula Drift Round 6.  We installed brand new axles and also decided to update the car a little bit with the newest & current version of our 13” big brake kit with 8 pot calipers up front and 4 pot out back.  There was nothing wrong with our 5 year old big brake kit, but there have been some changes aesthetically to the caliper size and design.  We also added a brand new hydraulic handbrake with its own separate reservoir and fixed all the OEM brake lines that failed on us in Seattle.

Our plans were to leave first thing Thursday morning and drive up to Vegas and participate in the optional practice session at the track.  So last Wednesday night, Corey took the car to the Bondurant facility for some shake down runs just to make sure everything was good to go.  I personally was not at the track that night since I put in a long night at the office getting ready plus had a ton of things to take care of at home before the trip.  I received a phone call around 11pm from Nick asking me if I had talked to anyone that was at the track, I said no I haven’t.  I asked why, he said “what’s the worst possible thing you can think of that could happen to the car?”  I replied “uh, something happened to the engine?!?”  He answered “Yep, motor blew up”.

Best sign of a blown engine?  Look for a puddle like this under the car when you hear a loud unusual noise! Oil and coolant all mixed together, excellent!

This is also not a good sign! Hand Model – Corey Hosford

At this point I was in complete shock.  With all the time and effort put into getting our team ready for this event I was at a loss for words.  Luckily our head mechanic Todd Lowell who is the owner of Fueled Racing had an extra LS1 engine at his shop and was already getting it ready to be transported over to the Bondurant Facility.

At this point the crew had a choice to make.  We either don’t go or we build a completely new motor, install it and make it to Vegas in less than 24 hours.  Team KSport doesn’t quit.  We put in WORK and get shit done!  The choice was obvious.

Epic destruction pics of the old LS1.  Piston to valve contact = affirmative!!

Yep, all that is NOT supposed to be in the oil pan!

More epic win destruction of the bottom end!

Hole in the cylinder wall!  No bueno!

Hole in the outside of the block

So much for our plans to leave the Ksport USA headquarters in Gilbert, AZ by 9am lol!  Unfortunately for us, this was not just going to be a simple task of dropping one engine out and throw the other one in.  Our engine has a cam, valvetrain upgrade, rod bolts, etc.  Plus our ECU is tuned specifically for our set up so we couldn’t just drop in a bone stock engine.  Everything that was still salvageable had to be transferred over.

We had to sand down the camshaft since it had a small amount of damage…

The rod shot thru the oil pan and into the steering rack!!  We had to replace the steering rack with a new unit…Don’t blame the nugget!  It wasn’t his fault!

After pulling a late night myself and sleeping maybe 4 hours, I arrived to Bondurant around 8:30am to see Todd, Dylan and Corey still going on strong after being up the entire night.   Empty cans of Redbull were scattered around the shop along with a couple boxes of some freakishly delicious donuts.  We had to wait till the local parts stores opened so we could run around town getting parts we needed like ARP rod bolts, spark plugs, steering rack, another brake booster (the one we installed in Seattle turned out to be bad) and an OEM oil pan gasket.  That ended up being 2.5 hours of running around to multiple stores across the Phoenix area.  Once we got all the parts back to the shop it was the final stretch.

Old head with valvesprings removed…

New engine almost ready….

Parts for days!!!!!!!!

Redbulls were needed in mass quantity to help the crew pull an all nighter!!

The freakishly delicious donuts provided some additional energy at 8am for the crew….

Patiently waiting for her new heart transplant….Don’t worry sweet thannnnnng, everything will be fine in a few hours!

Around 1:30pm Nick and I headed back to the Ksport office to finish up some more work while patiently waiting for the car to be completed.  We headed back up to Bondurant around 5:30pm and the crew was putting the finishing touches on the motor and getting it ready to crank over.

New engine all put together and ready to go in the car!

At around 6pm it was the moment we’ve all been waiting for…..the engine fired right up and ran perfect!!  Just to think that 18hrs ago we had a blown to pieces LS1.  The crew’s dedication to doing whatever it took to get this swap completed goes without saying.  Our crew rocks!!!  Period.

XDC Seattle: KSport Recap – Sponsored Car Nate Hamilton Takes 1st Place

Team Ksport had quite the journey to XDC Seattle.  While 1500 miles from home we had several issues that prevented us from running our s13.5 at 100% percent.  We had checked the car over in Arizona before we left and everything was good to go.  Friday afternoon was practice and Ksport USA driver Corey Hosford reported the car was running great and everything was good.

Towards the end of practice he radioed in to our head pit crew manager Todd Lowell and commented that it seemed he lost the power braking system and the car just felt like it had manual brakes.  The pit team immediately went to work and began troubleshooting.  We checked out the calipers, brake pads, rotors and handbrake.  Everything seemed in working order.  Todd’s last idea was to check the brake booster.  Sure enough the 21 year old OEM brake booster was the problem.  After taking the booster completely apart we found a tear in the diaphragm.  Every member of Team Ksport that had their cell phone was calling every single auto parts store we could find in the Kent & Seattle area.  Knowing that brake boosters are not usually a part most auto part stores will keep in stock, we had to find one no matter what.  We reached out to local drifters at the event and even posted on Facebook trying to see if anyone had one we could come buy from them.

We ended up finding an O’Reily’s that said they could have a booster for us the following day (Saturday) by 11am.  Practice was set to begin around noon so that would give us a little bit of time to get the new booster in and make sure everything is good to go.  We called it a night and decided to grab some food so we could discuss our game plan for the next day.  I was on a mission to find some wings & beer and ended up finding a place called Wingdome that was 2 miles from our hotel.  Being the wing connoisseur that I am I highly recommend this place if you’re ever in Kent, WA.

Saturday morning we got up early and headed to the track to get the car prepped so all we had to do when the booster arrived was install it and hopefully make practice.  We installed the booster but ended up having a couple more complications with an OEM brake line that began leaking which caused us to miss the entire practice session.  We jumped straight into qualifying with manual brakes and Corey being the boss he is pulled it off and made Top 16!!!  Who needs power brakes anyways?

Team Ksport driver George Marstanovic from Flagstaff, AZ who also ran into problems with his LS1 powered FC RX7 Friday during practice and who allowed George and his crew to come back after hours and continue working on his vehicle so it would be ready to go for practice in the morning.  Another one of Ksport’s sponsored drivers, Nate Hamilton and his crew 144 made the journey all the way from Texas to compete.  Nate has made it to every XDC event so far this season.

George and Nate both made Top 16.  Corey was up against 2010 XDC Champion Chelsea Denofa.  The judges called a one more time and Corey walked away with the win and advanced to the Great 8.  George and Nate eliminated their first opponents and advanced as well.  On Corey’s next run everything was going great until the final corner when he initiated and the car snapped back and spun out into the dirt.  Our car had to be towed off track and back to the pits.  After our pit team jacked the rear end up they noticed that both axles had snapped.

That was the end of the night for our s13.  Corey ended up finishing 7th place overall.  George Marstanovic got knocked as well and did not make it past the Final 4.  Nate Hamilton made his way thru opponent after opponent and ended up facing Walker Wilkerson for the final round of competition.  Walker’s diff ended up breaking and Nate took the 1st place trophy.  Overall Team Ksport did what they could despite all the mechanical problems with our car.  It was now crunch time to get the problems sorted out before Vegas Pro Am Round 4 / Formula D Round 6 in Las Vegas in 2 weeks.

Ksport USA would like to thank all of our sponsors that have made all of these events possible: Fueled Racing, Falken Tire, Exedy Clutch, APR Performance, Extreme Dimensions, Bondurant School of High Performance Driving, Elite Automotive Finishes and Xsell Media.

We would also like to thank our pit crew, employees and friends who have been supportive in lending a hand at each event.  We are lucky to have you as part of our team!

Team KSPORT Takes Home 2 Podium Finishes at Vegas Pro Am Round 3

Team Ksport had a great weekend in Las Vegas for Round 3 of Pro Am competition!!!  We had a few last minute issues to deal with Friday morning including finding out that we had one bad rear wheel bearing/hub….but luckily we were able to source a brand new part locally and get it all fixed thanks to Todd @ Fueled Racing.  We ended up leaving about 3 hours later than we had planned but we made it to Vegas safely around 2am Friday night.

It was a blast to have a lot of our Arizona friends hanging out with us in our pit area.  Arizona’s 2 best drivers George Marstanovic and Mike Burns set up with us and together we represented Arizona like a BOSS.  We were also lucky to have a local Vegas drifter Buckey Laing with his super rad FC pit with us.

Practice went really well as the drivers had a chance to get used to the track.  Many of the drivers were not in favor of the course layout but everyone seemed to adapt fairly well.  The layout allowed for fast entry speed and then immediately into 2 corners surrounded by walls.  Unfortunately a couple drivers hit the wall during practice and totaled their cars.  Thankfully there were no major injuries involved.

Corey Hosford driving our s13.5 qualified in 2nd place while George Marstanovic qualified 4th and Mike Burns qualified 8th.  For the top 16 run Corey Hosford had a bye-run since his competitor Manny Estrella was unable to run.  Corey, Mike and George all advanced to top 8.  Corey faced Danny George and took the win which allowed him to advance to top 4.  Top 4 competition ended up being George Marstanovic vs Josh Guild and Corey Hosford vs Mauricio Ornelas.  The first run George was set to follow Josh and it was a great battle between two v8 powered cars.  On the 2nd run George was leading and unfortunately for Josh Guild, he hit the wall which gave the win to George.  Josh was not injured in the collision but his s14 had to be towed off track.  There was a slight delay while the track staff had to clean up fluid spillage.  Corey Hosford was up next against Mauricio Ornelas in his RB25 powered Green s14.  Both drivers were a little concerned with the track conditions after the spillage and with that being said, Corey was hesitant to go into the first corner balls out.  Unfortunately the car straightened out a little bit due to the surface conditions at the first wall clipping point in Corey’s first pass.  The second run with Mauricio leading was really close as Corey put the pressure on Mauricio and stayed with him thru most of the track.  The win ended up going to Mauricio who advanced to face George.  George had a minor correction on the first run about mid track that ended up giving the 1st place position to Mauricio.  Final standings:  Mauricio Ornelas 1st place, George Marstanovic 2nd place and Corey Hosford 3rd place.  Team Ksport ends up with 2 podium finishes!!  Definitely can’t argue with that!!

We’d like to thank all our sponsors: Fueled Racing, Falken Tire, APR, Exedy, Extreme Dimensions, Xsell Media and Elite Automotive Finishes.  We couldn’t be where we are without your continued support!!!

Ksport Attends Vegas Drift Pro-Am Round 2 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway

Well, all in all Ksport had a pretty good weekend in sin city this past weekend even though we had a couple hiccups along the way Friday afternoon on the way up to Vegas.  Our owner’s NSX suffered a tire blow out on one of his rear 19″ Advan wheels just outside of Wickenburg, AZ.  Our good friend Todd from Fueled Racing was able to bring the necessary tools and spare stock wheels to get the NSX back on the road after a slight 3 hour delay on the side of the freeway.  Not long after that around 6:30pm, our 24ft enclosed trailer also blew out a tire just north of Boulder, NV.  Luckily for us it was only about a 30 minute turn around.  We had a spare wheel & tire but for some unknown reason the spare wheel was the wrong bolt pattern (wtf right?).  Luckily there was a Big O Tire about 8 miles away that was open till 7pm so Corey, Dustin and I made quick work of disconnecting the trailer, jacking it up, taking the wheel off and drove the truck down there to get the tires swapped over.

Once we got back on the road again, we drove straight to U-Drift which is located at Las Vegas Motor Speedway and has drift sessions 7 days a week.  We were able to meet several of the staff members and take our s13 around the track a couple times for some quick practice the night before the Pro-Am event.  Around 11pm we loaded the car back into the trailer and left it overnight in the parking lot along with several other out of state vehicles.  We hit up an In & Out for some double double goodness before heading to the strip and checking into Treasure Island where we were staying for 2 nights.

Saturday morning Corey Hosford, Dustin Millard and myself woke up early to start sourcing out a couple spare electric fans for our 240sx.  The last couple drift sessions we’ve been experiencing problems with the fan motors going out so we wanted to have some extra parts on hand just in case.  Turns out we ended up needing them and Todd from Fueled Racing installed and re-wired 2 new fans for us Saturday afternoon before the practice sessions began.

Practice went pretty well as Ksport driver Corey Hosford along with several other Arizona drivers including: George Marstanovic, Mike Burns, Sam Yousif, Danny Le, Chris Valet and Joel Mondragon all took a few hours to get used to the track layout.  Out of the AZ drivers, George Marstanovic qualified in 1st place with Mike Burns closely behind him and Corey Hosford qualified 12th.

Qualifying was a little frustrating for Team Ksport since it was our very first time running on the new Falken RT615K tires.  The tires provided INSANE grip compared to what we were running before.  We decided not to practice on the Falken’s because we only had 6 tires total for this event and we weren’t sure how long they would last us if we went into qualifying and beyond.  We learned a valuable lesson in that we should stick to one tire for practice AND qualifying.  We feel if we would have had more time with the RT615K’s we would have done much better.  All things to take into account for the next event we attend.

Congrats go out to Arizona driver Mike Burns for taking 1st place along with the award for “insane entry”.  Brandon Patterson placed 2nd, Mauricio Ornelas took 3rd, George Marstanovic took 4th place and our Ksport driver Corey Hosford placed 7th.  We are happy that we still placed in the top 8 especially considering that this is only Corey Hosford’s 2nd drift competition.  We look forward to moving forward with what we’ve learned from this event and hope to make the next one even better.

Thanks goes out to the Vegas Pro-Am and U-Drift crew for making us feel at home at the event.  Also we’d like to thank all of our sponsors: Fueled Racing, Exedy Clutch, APR Performance, Falken Tire, Extreme Dimensions, Elite Automotive Finishes and Xsell Media for all of their help in helping make our S13 drift car what it is today!  You guys are awesome and we appreciate all the help!

Team Ksport’s Xtreme Drift Circuit Experience – April 23rd 2011

Wow…..I don’t even know where to start with this but I’ll try to cover as much as I can.  I hope you all take the time to read this mini novel I threw together…..so here goes!

The last 3 weeks or so have been CRAZY for Team Ksport.  It was crunch time for us to prep our LS1 powered s13.5 and get it dialed in before the event.  With our new found driver, Corey Hosford, we were all extremely excited to see what was going to happen at Round 2 of XDC.  As many people already know Corey is a Bondurant School of High Performance Driving instructor who approached us not even 1 month ago inquiring if we needed a driver for our drift car program.  Our previous driver Jason Beatty is now driving his own personal car during the XDC competition (which is also a LS1 powered s13) so when Corey came around it was perfect timing.  We brought our car up to Bondurant where Corey took the car out as is for some shake down runs.  Needless to say after watching him go around the track a few times we knew Corey would be right at home.

Hover over pics with your mouse for caption

After Corey’s initial runs in the car it was time to begin all the fine tuning to get the car dialed in more to his liking.  There was a lot of work to be done in the following weeks.  Not only did we need to get the car set up correctly but we were planning on also doing a completely new vinyl wrap and get all new decals cut to showcase our new sponsors for the 2011 season.  At times it seemed like we just wouldn’t have enough time to get everything accomplished but everyone pulled together to help.  We spent countless hours at night and on weekends working on the car at Bondurant and Fueled Racing.  HUGE thanks go out to Todd at Fueled Racing, Dylan & Nate at Bondurant and Corey’s right hand man Dustin.  Also, thank you Jason Beatty for coming out to Bondurant on a Sunday and doing some practice tandem with Corey!  Without the help of these guys this event would not have been possible!

We ended up making a ton of adjustments to the vehicle over the course of a couple weeks.  Many different alignment set ups were tested & tried out, a new side exit exhaust was custom made, a badass new hydraulic handbrake handle was made from scratch, we uninstalled the old STRI gauges and replaced them with a single ARK Design multi function display, custom shortened OEM spindles by Future Fabrication, all appropriate safety measures were added including new tow hooks front and rear along with a main power kill switch, wider 275/40 tires out back replaced our old 255/40′s, new custom steel crash bar for front end, a brand new front bumper by Extreme Dimensions with paint by Elite Automotive Finishes and last but not least a completely new vinyl wrap and all new decals by Xsell Media.

Thursday night before practice day on Friday several of us were at Fueled Racing till nearly 1am getting last minute modifications done to the car.  Gotta love getting home at almost 2am, crashing out around 2:30am and waking up at 6am in order to have the car ready to go at Firebird Raceway by 7:30am!!  I know damn sure we were not the only team putting in a late night getting the car ready!  It’s all just part of the game when its crunch time and I know many other drifters out there know what I’m talking about.

Friday morning = driver load in and practice day.  For myself, Corey & Dustin our morning started bright and early at 7:30 when we arrived to the track.  We ran the car over to Bondurant for a quick car wash and then waited for everyone else to slowly roll in.  The Team Ksport pit area consisted of Corey Hosford, Jason Beatty, Chris Soehren, George Marstanovic, Chris Vallet and Nate Hamilton had his area set up a few spaces away.  Practice went very well with Corey getting more comfortable with the car and the track layout.  By the end of the first practice session we’d say he had it nailed down.  There was a close call with the rear bumper and clipping point which left our bumper in 2 pieces, but no biggie, that’s what zipties are for!!  Later in the afternoon came the tandem practice.  Corey seemed right at home and was definitely not afraid to get up close and personal with the other drivers.  Unfortunately for our friend Nate Hamilton, his LS2 engine had some issues which later turned out to be damage to one of the pistons and valve contact.  Huge bummer for Nate and the 144 crew!!!  The 144 crew kept in good spirits though despite the engine failure and they were more than helpful to Corey and Team Ksport.  You guys rock!!!

Saturday = Main Event.  Practice was set to kick off at 12:30pm.  At about 11:45am disaster struck for the Ksport s13.  While attempting to change out the rear wheels for another set with fresh tires, two of the rear wheel studs BROKE!!!!  We were able to get the car over to Bondurant so we had access to getting the car on a lift to make it easier to work on but disaster struck AGAIN when trying to remove the other lugs.  4 more wheel studs broke!!! ...

Redline Time Attack April 9-10th AZ Recap

Well if one track weekend isn’t enough how about 2 in a row! The following weekend after the Modified Tuner Shootout/NASA AZ Night Event there was a Redline Time Attack Event. I “Travis” decided it would be a great idea to run because it was at Firebird International Raceway Main Track, a track we don’t get to run all the time. So I call up some of the AZ guys “Tony Szirka from UMS Tuning and Phil Robles” to see if they wanted to run. Tony was game, just had to work out a few things on his car and he would be ready to go. Phil wanted to see if the guys over at Ksport wanted to bring out their RDH 2004 Integra Type R to play. After getting the word back from Phil that Ksport was game I called up Nick from RTA to work out all the details for the weekend.

Friday rolled around and I was down at Forced Air Tech waiting for Adam from DBtuning to get there with the guys from THmotorsports.com with their 04 Sti. I had talked to Adam earlier that week about how he was going to be tuning THmotorsports Sti and I told him to come on down to AZ and they could use our dyno here. They got to the shop around 6pm so we didn’t waste any time getting the car on the dyno and start tuning. We finished up around 10pm so we packed up and Adam and I headed down to UMS Tuning to see how things were going there. Tony was finishing up the last few things on his car to get it up and running then on to the dyno to check everything out.

Saturday morning we all headed to the track only to get rained on for the first part of the day. The guys over at THmotorsports hooked me up with a used set of Toyo R888’s to run so I could run in Mod AWD. Tony from UMS Tuning ran his EVO in Super Mod AWD and Phil Robles AKA “The Ksport Cowboy” ran the Ksport Integra in Super Mod FWD. I headed out on track get a feel for the tires with the track still a little wet and after a slow spin in the tower turn I decided to play it safe and come in. Later that day the sun came out and started dry up the track so we all hit the track hoping to lay down some faster times. I ended running a 1:06.323 for the day and Phil laid down a 1:07.623. The weather started to move back in so we packed up for the day and headed out for the night.

So, overall we all had a great weekend at the track minus the car problems. I ended up with a first place win in Mod AWD and second place overall in TA, Tony took first in Super Mod AWD, and Phil took first in Super Mod FWD. After the awards we all watched the Circuit Battle and of course we started up Beer Time Attack at that time too. Big thanks to Nick at RTA for getting us in, THmotorsports for help me out on the tires, TAYKO Garage for track side support, Ksport, and everyone that helped us out at the event.

Sunday brought clear and sunny skies making it a nice day for racing. The track was dry and we all suited up for our first practice of the day. Practice went pretty well for all of us and with just a few minor adjustments to the cars we were ready for the first time attack session.  About an hour later we all headed down to grid to get lined up for our first TA session. I headed out on track but I forgot my gloves so I had to come back in and get them. However, this worked out in my favor for when I headed back out I had an open track to myself. My first lap I ran a 1:05.571 and if my second lap was fast as my Aimsports was telling me I was on track for a low 1:04 lap. Coming up on the tower turn my tranny start to make a noise and to play it safe I just brought it in. I could have possibly taken the AWD Mod class record but the car thought otherwise, maybe next year. Tony hit the track with his EVO pulling off a 1:06.168 lap time on some very tired tires so not to bad of a run for him.  The Ksport Cowboy took the track in the Ksport Type R after a quick tire swap he was able to get a clean lap in with a 1:08.447. Though they were having tranny problems too he ran very close to his Saturday practice time.
